In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Looking back through our research or real
media products I feel that our film trailer both uses and challenges the
understanding of thriller conventions. From our research we can see clearly
that there are set out conventions that most thriller films tend to follow.
Rating Card
At the beginning of a trailer you would
typically find a rating card, which would introduce the film as being certified
as being a certain age rating. With our rating card we have followed the
typical conventions of a thriller genre. It is said that the green rating card
is set to be a universal watch, although I have looked at many of the thriller
genre adverts and found that most of the use the dark green rating card back
ground. For example if you look below you can see the comparison to our rating
card on the right and then a real life media products rating car on the left.
Production
Company
For our production company I did plenty of
research into what each well know film company has produced and what film
company would be the most suitable to produce our film. During my research I
found that Lionsgate would be the most appropriate, as this is linked to summit
entertainment and summit entertainment is one of the man co-producers of
thriller films. We looked at films such as gone and found that the had used
summit but we then later on found that summit had been take over by Lionsgate
and therefore this was our inspiration as to why we have chosen Lionsgate as
our main institution. Normal thriller films would have multiple producers and
this is why we have chosen both Lionsgate and summit. These producers would help to promote the
film to typical audiences that we would want to aim our film at. As you can see
we have used the typical media conventions to help inspire us as to what
production company to use.
In normal thriller conventions normally
there is a voice over but we didn’t feel that it was suitable to have girls
voices doing the voice over for our film trailer and so therefore decided to go
against this conventions and start using quotes to tell the audience what the
film is loosely based upon. We decided to look at different texts and decided
what the most suitable text was and we felt the text that we used would go
along with the conventions that we would normally use.
Reviews and Ratings
Most film trailers whether they are under
the thriller genre or not have reviews and ratings in their film trailers. We felt
it was acceptable to put these in our film trailer as we felt that they look
really effective and sells the film more as people will see that if big companies
like the film they are sure to like the film as well. It may not be very common
to find the use of a review card during a thriller trailer but we thought to go
against the conventions of the thriller genre and out them in our final
project.
Characters
I feel that with our characters we have
gone completely against the thriller genre norms, as our main character is
actually the female lead. We have two main characters, which is Caleb and Kyra.
Caleb is a main character but if we was to go ahead and make the film I don’t
think that he would feature that much in our film, although the story is set
around the idea of him the most featured character would be kyra, meaning that
we are not abiding to the conventions of our genre. I feel that we have given our
self an advantage by choosing to have a female lead because if this was to be a
real life media product our main target audience is women and therefore I would
be easier for them to relate to the lead character and feel the put themselves in
her situation. The other two characters that we have chose are a typical villain
and the damsel in distress which comply to the conventions of thriller genre.
Sound
Most thriller genres show a diegetic sound
and therefore we have decided to go along with this convention as it helps to
set the mood, we looked at making loads of different sounds and finally come up
with the one that we felt sounded the most distorted but still was bearable to
listen to. By using skills that I have acquired through using iMovie I was able
to adjust the level of the sound to make it either go louder or quitter.
Therefore I layers all the sounds at the middle (climax) of the trailer to
build tension and this worked really well as I have seen this been done by
other real life media texts that I looked at and researched into.
By listening to all the sounds on different
thriller trailers I was able to get and idea of the sort of genre that would
have been suitable to play n the background of our film trailer.
