Filming session; Number three

In our third filming session we went around our housing estate and felt that it would be good to take the advantage of the fact we could walk around in the darkness and film Ella the actor that plays Kyra running around the street trying to find help, these shots worked out really well there was enough light so that you could clearly see what was happening as well as it being dark enough to set the mood. We made the Ella the girl that plays Kyra hold the camera as she was running and this worked really well, from my research I found that a lot of movies used this technique of filming and so we thought it would be conventional of us to try out with way of filming. Ella is panting and crying as she runs and therefore the non-diegetic sounds creates a really eary effect.
We used one of our cars to film the scene of Kyra talking to Katy over the phone, there wasn’t very good light at this point and so had to make do with using the touches on our phone in order to light the set.
At the end of our filming session we went home and attempted to film a short clip of the two sisters talking, but u fortunately this didn’t work out as we would have hoped and so we have decided not to put this in the final trailer.

Filming Session; Number two

In our second filming session we went down to fort Amherst as we though the tunnels would be a really good place to film some of our footage. We was proved right because looking back at our footage to montage of different clips looks really good together and I feel that I’m going to edit them together using jump shots etc. to create tension. While at fort Amherst the shots we filmed was with the camera inside the tunnel facing to the outside of the tunnel and we had our actor Luke run and walk past the tunnel several times until we was happy with the outcome.
Other shots that we filmed that we filmed where shots such as me and Luke walking into the tunnel from both behind us and in front of us, although when we got it onto the computer the lighting wasn’t very good so we have tried to edit it and change the contrast to make it look darker to create more enigma.
We took a few panning shots of the ground which also aren’t that good as there was a lot of people around the grounds meaning that we didn’t think it would suit the theme of our trailer as with thrillers people often tend to be alone and not within the safeness of the community.

Filming Session; Number one

Filming session 1
In our first filing session we waited for the sun to go down and then we was able to start filming random pieces that we though would look good in our final piece, at first we had a set plan as to what bits we was going to film but found that when we looked back through he footage it was the bits that we didn’t mean to film that ended up being the best bits for example I film our main character Luke walking out his house and this is actually one of the best parts of the film as he has a hoodie on and it therefore creates the feeling that he is someone to beware of as this is the typical stereotype that we would put on someone wearing a hoodie with the hood up. I also shot filming of his eyes whilst he was concentrating on the computer and this also looks really good and its used in a lot of thriller films.
I filmed an over the shoulder shot of Luke walking out the house as well as the normal shot of Luke walking out the door, although this wasn’t as effective as you couldn’t quite see his hoodie and it was too dark.

Target audience

Target audience
By using the information that we have gathered from our questionnaire we have come up with the final types of traits that our target audience we have. These being; aged between 16-35, as these are the main ages that we have asked in our questionnaire and I feel this is a good age range as it appeals to a lot of people. They like to go and watch films at the cinema, maybe on a date as they are around the age of dating high. They really enjoy a good storyline so something that has not nessicerially been seen before in cinema. Finally they like to be on the edge of their seats when watching a film.

Below is an example of a member of our mass target audience:
Mel, she is a 26-year-old woman who has recently looking to start dating again. She is a big fan of the ‘Hunger Game’ films and really enjoys watching film that Lionsgate creates as she feel that they are very well created and never fail to please her. She has been asked on a date to go to the cinema and really like films that will put her on the edge of her seat. Therefore she would come to see purgatory.

Below is an example of a member of our niche target audience:
Dan, is a 30 year old man who has asked Mel out on a date but enjoys watching action films and doesn’t partially find films that have a female lead very good, although he really likes the main female lead and feels that she would be a good watch for an hour and a half and so takes Mel to watch this film.
This would be an example of our niche audience as he doesn’t partially enjoy the thriller genre but is going this Mel because she has picked her type of film that she would want to watch.

Characters

In our film trailer there will be three main characters. These characters include Luke- this is the main male role in the film, who is also seen as the villain of the film. He is the one that end up abducting the young blonde girl, named Katy. Ella, who in the film is called Kyra, will play the main female lead. Kyra and Katy are sisters and so Kyra end up trying to find Katy portraying Kyra as the hero of the film.

Caleb
Caleb is played by Luke, Caleb is our main character and we feel as he is foreseen as the villain he has the most enigma surrounding him and therefore we wanted to play on this by hiding his identity with dressing him all in black and hiding his face on some occasions with a mask. The mask we have made has distorted features and is painted black with white eyes. The use of the colour black was to signify the idea of death, mystery and evil as this is how we would like our target audience to see him.
-Most of our inspiration for Luke’s character came from the film the purge. We have looked at many different film trailers for the thriller genre and the purge stood out to us because although it follows most of the normal conventions for a thriller genre it also break out from the rest of the mix. One part of the trailer shows a group of people knocking at a door, the man in the foreground is dressed in a suit wearing a mask with distorted features. This is where we took the idea of the mask from because we though that it created mystery and intrigued us more. The fact that he was dressed in a black suit also inspired us because we believed that this portrayed power and this is how we wanted to represent Luke. Although we did not feel that Luke wearing a suit in our film would be very suitable so we have decided to tweak it to be more modern, by getting him to wear black jeans a black t-shirt and a black hoddie. By him wearing all black this still created the feeling of evil, and it also looks quite smart meaning that we are still portraying the power that he carries as a character.
-In the purge when they are knocking at the door, we also noticed that there was a female stood beside the man dressed in white. We noticed that this was completely against the conventions of a thriller genre as we found, whilst researching, that white represents purity. This confuses us because the colour is telling us that we should not fear this character yet the situation that she is placed in means that we should, creating a juxtaposition. The white creates an even scarier atmosphere because it is so out of place. So for the mask that Luke will be wearing in the film we have decided to give him white eyes and mouth because we feel that this will make the mask stand out more and give him even more enigma.

Katy
Katy is the girl that gets abducted; I will play this character. During the making and planning of our film we originally had someone else to play Katy, but the filming schedule would not have worked out with her in it so we had to back track and realized I would just be easier if I was to play Katy. Although Katy is a main character she is not in the film that much, she is the one that gets abducted by Caleb and gets rescued by her sister Kyra.

Kyra
Kyra is one of main character in the film as she is the one that helps to save Katy. They are sisters and therefore the audience will be able to relate to this easy relationship because most people have a sibling relationship. She will be dressed in dark clothes in the trailer as we feel this give her the edge that she needs- almost portraying her as a tomboy. Because we would not nessicerially associate a girl as the hero of a story we are going against the conventions of any basic story line. But we though it would be good to have a female hero, as females don’t often get shown as very intelligent in films. The idea of Kyra comes from the film gone, where Amanda Seyfried plays a story female character and we really liked the idea of portraying a girl to be more masculine then films often make women out to be.
She will be dressed in hoodies and have minimal makeup on through out the trailer show we can access the grunge look that we are trying to portray in her. We also want to keep that female edge about her so she’ll wear skinny jeans and converse. We would like to show her figure so that people can still associate her as a female lead.
The girl playing Kyra is a young looking girl and we felt this would keep the innocence about her as a character, although she has short bobbed hair and this shows the tomboy off in her character- although we would like to represent her as a tough outgoing girl who would be able to stand her ground in situation like this.
